" I loved reading all about the history of the Morgan horse, and it was a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down. Such a great story as well as a history of young America, and what the horses role was within that history."

"Horses have a history that goes way back before humans walked the earth – fifty-five million years ago. Horses have long been an important part of human life. In Mary Chris Foxworthy’s Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats, one present-day Morgan Horse by the name of Hark tells his story and that of his ancestors as the horse we know today evolved from a small, dog-sized forest creature, an Eohippus. Hark takes the reader on a journey through time, introducing the horses of ancient times and the Middle Ages, right up to the present day. Hark discusses his breed and shares some of his grand adventures as a domesticated animal.
Mary Chris Foxworthy’s story, Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats, is a great tool to teach young readers about the history of the horse. Written in the first person from Hark’s point of view, the story reads like a gentle, very personal retelling of how things developed over time. The language is simple to help youngsters improve their reading skills. Colorful illustrations and photographs complement the narrative. Hark shares stories of the many jobs his ancestors have done over time, from providing a source of milk (yes, horses were milked like cows and still are in some places) to providing transportation to being showpieces like the beautiful Lipizzaners of Vienna, and so much more. The author provides a thorough list of additional resources at the end of the book. Although this is intended as a detailed look at the Morgan Horse breed, it’s also a historical guide to the lengthy and noble ancestry of all horses - a great addition to the Hoofbeats Through History series. Fascinating!"
"The book was amazing. After studying for four years about the places, people, wars, and travels, making a connection to what he learned was icing on the cake. Once he started the book he only stopped for lunch and then finished the book. He relayed to me he wished it wasn’t over, he loves horses, history, and timelines. He would love more books like this." "The book was very interesting! We love horses, but had no idea about the depth of their history. We found the book extremely interesting and we're consistently surprised by the new information we learned."(parent of 9 year old in 3rd grade, and 7 year old in 2nd grade – public school)

"I liked the research that went in to write this book. Anyone who loves horses would like to read it. Hark
is going to be the Breyer model this year."
