Horses do need some help writing the books

Meet Mary Chris Foxworthy, the passionate advocate for horses in preserving their history and bringing their stories to life in print.

My lifelong love for horses was sparked by my grandfather's ownership of one of the last horse-drawn milk wagon creameries in the United States. This connection led me to fulfill my lifetime dream of owning a Morgan horse after college.

Throughout my journey, I have actively served on various equine association boards, held a judge’s card in Carriage Driving, and worked as a Research Writer for The Equine Heritage Institute, contributing to eighteen books in the Gloria Austin Collection. These experiences have also allowed me to travel and present equine educational programs. Additionally, I have been recognized for my contributions to equine publications and received an award from American Horse Publications for one of my articles.

The Hoofbeats Through History book series, launched with the prequel "Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats," was inspired when our horse HD Harkness became a Breyer model horse. Becoming a Breyer model horse is a significant honor in the equestrian and model horse communities. It provides recognition and legacy, educational value, collector's item appeal, inspiration, and fosters a sense of community and shared passion at events such as BreyerFest. “Hark! Follow My Hoofbeats” went on to win an award from American Bookfest. Over 21 years, well-known authors like Amy Tan, Anne Lamott, Brad Thor, and others have won American Bookfest prestigious Best Book Award.

My active participation in Carriage Driving and Dressage, alongside cherished family moments with my husband, children, grandchildren, horses, and our beloved Bearded Collie, are all part of my dedication to the equestrian world.

The is me with my Grandfather falling in love with "Tommy".  Each grandchild had a horse to love - and mine was Tommy. This sparked my life-long passion for all things horse related.

This is the day I bought Battons Regency, my first horse. He went on to win many Morgan World Championships in Carriage Driving

Regency even pulled one of my Grandfather's milk wagons. He did his victory pass at an extended trot. I don't think milk wagon horses would do that - it would turn the cream into butter!

Our children rode Regency too and I rode him side saddle and even tried Parade.

The next horse to join the family was Battons Oak-A-Motion. We showed him pair and tandem with Regency. That's "Oakie" in the lead and Regency in the wheel position. On his own Oakie was pretty fancy and fun to ride and drive!

Everyone has a family comedian. Ours is Tyson! Like all of our Morgan horses, we got him when he was very young - only seven months old. There is not a day that goes by that he does not make me laugh. He's a joy to ride too!

When Dar Vale Knight Hawk joined the family as a coming 3 year old, the breeder had been calling him Junior because he looked so much like his sire, Worthington Hawk. I thought it was not a very elegant name for an elegant horse, but it stuck and I don't think he minded. He was so laid back. He was truly the role model gelding. He was a sweet, kind and easy to be around horse. Junior played the part of the "Charger",  the mascot for Powers Catholic High School in Flint, Michigan.  He was fun to ride and drive and even made the cover of the Driving Horse Calendar.

Hark (HD Harkness) is our very own Breyer model horse. What a thill to be selected to become a Breyer model! He is an amazing carriage driving horse.

Then along came Romano Imperator. We call him "Rosie" because his color is rose grey - plus he has a "rosie" personality! He is a PRE (Pura Raza Espanola). Gloria Austin gave him to me in exchange for writing one of her books.  He knows way more than I do when it comes to dressage since he was trained in Spain. He's an amazing carriage driving horse too. He is a pro at rolling in the dirt - we think he does it so he can look like a Morgan so we call him our Spanish Morgan.

Finally meet our newest family member, Greentree Storm Bell (aka "Tiger"). He went to his first show and won his dressage class and my husband drove him at the show too. We are so excited to have him as a family member!
